In upcountry Thailand a marriage in a village is a big deal and a grand affair. The ceremony is the traditional Buddhist ceremony and usually starts very early in the morning and spans several days and usually involves lots of singing, dancing and alcohol besides the actual wedding ceremony itself. Whereas marriage in the West is something of a somber affair a marriage in Thailand is as close to a party as you can get.
There are certain responsibilities from the groom in terms of Thai culture that must be respected and they can be the source of many bitter conversations or arguments (such as the dowry) but essentially if you are getting married then you should really not be complaining and you should also have researched what was expected of you as having a marriage in Thailand gives you rights and responsibilities which many people are not used to due to the contrasting differences between what they know of marriage and what they expect. But make no mistake; a marriage in Thailand is still a marriage for life just as it is in in any other country.
